Lastly, it is worthy of noting that the
MPI Freiburg initiated this research program on violence and peace in the Middle
Eastern societies in December 2003 by organizing an International
Expert’s Seminar on “Alternative Means to Retributive Justice in Violent
Conflicts in the Middle East” in Istanbul, Turkey. This event then followed-up in September 2004
by an International Symposium on “Formal and Informal Means of Conflict
Prevention and Resolution in the Middle
East” in Bamberg, Germany. See the conference final report here. In these conferences more than 40 researchers,
scholars and professors from the region took part.
The publication of a comprehensive book titled Conflicts
and Conflict Resolution in Middle Eastern Societies – Between Tradition and
Modernity, is a scientific product of this program. This book
containing numerous scholarly pieces written primarily by researchers from the Middle East, aims to demonstrate an intercultural dialogue on issues of violence
and peace.
